Factory Town

c1977 by Michael Jerling

From the album Early Jerling

Papa told me you'll wind up a bum
Whatcha gonna do with your life, do
Mama scolds me, she don't like us fightin'
And she says the boy's alright

Late afternoon at the Hide-a-While Bar
Ray jams with the jukebox on pool cue guitar
The truckers gear down for the Ninth Street hill
With the roar of diesel, steel against steel

Franco and Willy are just hangin' round
Waitin' for the unemployment checks to run out
Smoke themselves silly, go cruisin' the town
Whatcha gonna do tonight, do

At three o'clock up on high school hill
The sidewalk unfolds to the boys and the girls
With hungry hands and a hijacked limousine
You've got a fire in your head and a secret in your jeans

Papa told me, you'll wind up a bum
Whatcha gonna do with your life, do
Mama scolds me, she don't like us fightin'
And she says the boy's alright

There's a life to be made for a good union man
You can work by the hour and work with your hands
Logging overtime towards that sweet Promised Land
At the wheel of your new Chevrolet
The wheel of your new Chevrolet

Factory Town, gotta river for a soul
Gotta a fist full of iron and a belly full of coal
You smell like hell, you're dirty and you're cold
But I swear you still feel like home
