The Hard Stuff

© 2013 by Michael Jerling

From the album Halfway Home

His old man used to yell at
The TV late at night
Pressed up against the thin wall
In a world of black & white
Kids today, the government
The way it used to be
He'd pour another nightcap
Just to help him sleep

He was workin' on the hard
He was workin' on the hard stuff

It should have been all gravy
It should have been all cream
Grandkids on the weekend
Livin' out the dream
But the walls kept closing in
And buried her in doubt
Now she's starting over
Now she's digging out

She's workin' on the hard
She's workin' on the hard stuff

And sometimes when he yells at
The TV late at night
Up against the thin wall
A world of black & white
Things get complicated
They get tied up in knots
Sometimes it gets better
Sometimes it does not

When you're workin' on the hard
When you're workin on the hard stuff (2x)
